Immobilized enzyme process development

A safe, nutritious and sustainable food supply requires innovative approaches.

A safe, nutritious and sustainable food supply requires innovative approaches. Bota Bio has developed synthetic biology technologies tailored for the food industry. This approach efficiently converts renewable raw materials into existing and new essential food components and functional food additives, addressing the evolving needs of the food supply chain.

Challenges

Biological production of a new and popular natural sweetener is more sustainable and has higher product purity than the chemical synthesis. However, it needs to increase production capacity and reduce cost. These challenges can be addressed by improving enzymes with higher catalytic activity and stable conversion rate, and developing a continuous production process.

Solutions

We designed a continuous flow reaction mode with immobilized enzymes and developed multiple parallel reaction systems.
This allows for the orderly progression of substrate inflow, catalytic reactions by immobilized enzymes, and continuous product separation.

Results and impact

Through enzyme evolution and the optimization of enzyme immobilization,
our enzymes maintained their conversion rates for 50 consecutive days.

90%

Compared to batch operation modes, our enzyme costs reduced by 90%. This is a highly competitive solution for industrial-scale production of this new natural sweetener.
